Aviation airborne watches were made at the First Watch Factory by request of the Central Air Force Administration in 1932. Then the following types of watches and clocks were designed as continuation: aviation and marine chronographs, deck clocks, stopwatches, navigator’s wristwatches with stopwatch, car mechanical clocks and clocks with electric actuator. Finally, watch, which was called “Shturmanskie” (Navigator’s watch) was made by special request of Air Force in 1949. STURMANSKIE watches had been manufactured specially for Air Force and did not go on sale. Shturmanckie watches were given to air force pilots together with Diploma of graduation from Military School. Unique watch mechanism allows to synchronize indications of pilots’ chronographs and thus to perform coordinated joint actions. It was particularly required in the course of joint operations of large air force units and groups as well as for numerous crews of strategic bombers, transport aircraft and so on. So the name of the mechanism – chronograph – derives from the purpose of the watch – to fix time, not “a chronometer” – to measure time. At first when a pilot retired, a special committee decided whether to let him keep the Sturmanskie watch. Yu. A. Gagarin took “Sturmanskie” watch with him in the first space flight on 12th April, 1961. This historical event spurred development of a new trend in watch industry as leaders of the world watch industry began to develop special programs-collections of watches for aerospace industry. Nevertheless, Soviet cosmonauts flew into space taking watches produced at the First Moscow Watch Factory. New commemorative model of the STURMANSKIE watch – GAGARIN has been designed by the fortieth anniversary of the first man’s space flight as continuation of traditions of the watch line development.

Aviator

First Moscow Watch Factory was built in 1930, it started production of first pocket watches in November 1930. Production of special watches for aviation industry had been developed and put into practice during the period from 1931 till 1935. All Soviet military planes were equipped with watches produced at First Moscow Watch Factory during the World War II. Pilots and navigators of Air Force had FMWF’s wristwatches. Watches of AVIATOR line were designed in homage to all heroic pilots of our country. They are made in stylized military design. Large figures, hands and signs are filled up with special luminescent coating, which does not contain any harmful elements. Wide variety of sizes, different types of mechanisms used in the watch line provide an opportunity to make a choice for the most fastidious customer.

Buran

Successful testing of shuttlecraft BURAN was carried out in the Soviet Union on November 15, 1988. After an universal rocket space transportation system “Energy” with the shuttle BURAN had been launched, a spaceship went into estimated orbit, flew twice round the Earth and landed in automatic mode on a landing ground of Baikonur space center. It was a remarkable success of our national science and technology, which opened up a completely new stage in the Soviet Program of Space Exploration. The BURAN shuttle is designed according to a “tailless” plane with a delta wing of variable sweep. It has aerodynamic flight controls - a rudder and elevon, which operate during landing after the shuttle has come back into dense upper atmosphere. It can perform guided lowering in atmosphere with a side maneuver up to 2000 km. First flight of BURAN lasted 205 minutes and was completed with a successful landing on a special landing strip, which was about 5 km long and 80 m wide. The landing strip was built in Baikonur space center. It was the first and still unique automatic landing of a shuttlecraft in the history of space exploration. Wristwatches of BURAN line were designed in honor of the event.

Russian Chronograph

The watch name indicates the type of the watch. Design style of Russian wristwatches is well known in the world. Military Russian chronograph

This watch line is of military style. Large numerals and signs, glowing at night, luminescent hands, large massive cases made of polished or satin blasted steel. Faces are terse and functional. Watches are with increased water resistance, they have anti-shock device of a balance staff, large convenient knobs.

Amphibian

First waterproof wristwatches were designed at First Moscow Watch Factory by a special request of Army and Navy in 1953. The model was called BEACON and it withstood pressure up to 3 ATM. Newspapers of that time cited a story, that once a man dropped his wristwatch into water in autumn and could not find it. Next summer he came to the same place on holiday and accidentally found his watch at the depth of 3-4 meters while diving. The man picked the watch up, wound it up and – it worked! Water resistance of the watch was not damaged after a year of lying on the bottom, there was not any drop of water inside the mechanism. AMPHIBIAN watch was designed on the base of BEACON wristwatch with 2616 mechanism with automatic winding-up. They have been manufactured in several modifications since 1969: a simple model, water resistant watch 3 ATM and a wristwatch with a screw heads with increased water resistance up to 20 ATM. Original design of the case made of special steel with a rotating ring, large luminescent figures and hands – this main trend in design was kept in the course of further development of the model line of this series.

This watch line is characterized with line distinctness, terse style of watch face and stylish design. The watch line is based on unique mechanism 2612, which is equipped with alarm device and its own actuator. Very few companies in the world produce such watch mechanisms and all of them are located in Switzerland. Albatross

This watch line is devoted to Russian aeronautical engineering. Name of the line comes from a name of a real plane – well-known amphibian aircraft A-40 – ALBATROSS. Watches are remarkable for original design, they are made on the basis of two mechanisms: 3133 and 31682 with additional 24-hour scale and an indicator “Day and Night”. Multifunctionality of the watch face allows to perform many operations on measuring time characteristics of different processes, percentage ratio and so on. This watch line has been manufactured only with 500 items in total number. Watch covers have the following bas-reliefs: TITANIC ship and a wind rose, split by an iceberg. They remind of a tragic history of TITANIC ocean-liner wreck in 1912.
