Wristwatches will look after the child
Two companies Cambridge Positioning Systems and Xion are going
to produce child's wristwatches with position control system. The main element
of this "nanny watch" is Matrix software. It will guarantee the search
of the child to 100 meters from base cellular stations GSM. The watch also may
inform the parents immediately after the child has left some territory or taken
the watch off. Besides this model has SMS, MMS functions, alert button and several
games. Xion company will produce the watch itself, CPS company will be responsible
for the software. This model will appear on Europe market at the beginning of
the next year.
Swiss fakes
A hundred thousands of fake Swiss watches Rolex, Cartier, Rado,
Patek Philippe, Tag Heuer were withdrawn at the Customs and destroyed. All in
all about 5 tons of them were destroyed. Last year Swiss watchmakers destroyed
400 thousands of fakes, which were destined for Gulf States. Fake production
causes annual damage to Swiss watches industry of 533 mln euros. The annual
production of Swiss watches is about 26 mln items. At the same time about 30-40
mln of fakes are produces abroad. The production of one fake watch costs 2 -
13 euros, when in the Internet its price is 1000 euros. Fakes are usually produced
in China, Turkey, Italy and Spain.
Ancient Breguet watches in the Hermitage
The exhibition "Ancient Breguet Watches"
is opened in the State Hermitage from June, 10 till September, 26. It is dedicated
to a famous watchmaker - Abraham Luis Breguet (1747-1823) and shows the old
connections of this watchmaker with Russia. This exhibition is organized by
the State Hermitage together with Breguet Museum, Louvre (Paris), the Museum
of Arts (Paris), Beyer Museum (Zurich), "ETA s.a." collection, State
historic-cultural reserve "Moscow Kremlin" (Moscow), British Museum
(London). There are more than 100 items on the exhibition. War watch with pedometer
belonged to Russian emperor Alexander I, Simpathique watch of the grand prince
Konstantin, coach watch made for Napoleon and prince Demidov, emperor's watch
with Russia and St. Petersburg maps, Duc de Praslin watch are presented on the
exhibition. The latter is considered to be the most complicated watch produced
by A.-L. Breguet.

BaselWorld
Specialists and participants of BaselWorld-2004
familiarized themselves with the production of the best Russian manufacturers
for the first time in the history of the biggest watch exhibition in the world.
The watches "Anlina", "Volmax",
"Vostok", "Golden Time", "Molnija", "Orion",
"Poljot", "Tek Art", "Chaika" were presented at
the stand with the most popular national RUSSIA MOSCOW brands. Russian watches
and movements looked even better than some swiss models. Basel public was interested
in all models: high-quality gold and jewellary handmade "Golden Time"
watches; fashion aviation-sport "Volmax" and "Poljot" chronographs;
very cheap and at the same time automatic "Vostok" movements; tiny
lady's "Chaika" movements; and even pocket "Molnija" watchets
expanded the set of models.

Space "Do it yourself"
Russian cosmonauts create watches for
themselves. Yuriy Baturin and the group of cosmonauts visited the headquarters
of the Russian watches company "Volmax", where they familiarized themselves
with all the steps of watch production, beginning with design-bureau and ending
with assembling. The matter is that "Volmax", which owns the brand
of the first space watch "Shturmanskie", wants to continue the tradition
and produce a new collection of russian space watches. To make the future collection
really reliable and effective for work in space the leaders of "Volmax"
asked the cosmonauts to be experts.
"Kosmonavigator" achieves orbit
The famous watch "Kosmonavigator",
which was created by cosmonaut Vladimir Djanibekov and company "Verniy
Hod" by request of Rosaviacosmos, has gone to its first flight. This watch,
which can find the location of space station in the Earth orbit thanks to a
special scale, was included to the equipment of the cosmonauts of the 9th space
expedition - Edward Michael Fink (USA), Gennadiy Padalka (Russia). The expedition
started in April, 19. Cosmonauts will be on MKS until October, 2004.
3 mln for F1 Ralph
Shumaher, the younger brother of repeated world champion in "Formula-1",
became the face of Oris company. The leaders of swiss watch brand, which celebrates
its 100 years anniversary this year, consider that the audience of the company
and the audience of the race F1 is the same all over the world. That's why the
company uses "Formula" for the advertisment purposes. On the exhibition
in Basel CEO of the company Oris Ulrih Hercog declared about contract with BMW-Williams
F1 team. According to this contract all the members of the team will wear Oris
watches, Oris logo will appear on their head-phones and so on. The cost of the
year contract is 3 mln USD.
Quinting achieves new markets The
leader of Quinting company Pascal Berclaz visited Moscow in May 2004. The young
company Quinting is famous for its unique watches with absolutely transparent
movement. The idea of transparent watches had been in the watchmakers' minds
for a long time, but only Quinting watchmakers could make it a reality. The
secret is in the usage of non-traditional material - sapphire for wheels. The
leader of the small watches company (there are only 10 watchmakers work) tells
about strategic plans of brand developing in Russia.
New Boss In
April, 27 the presentation of the world famous fashion-brand Hugo Boss took
place. In Russia it is represented by "Ostwind" company. Among novelties
a special place is given to watches collections, which play a great part in
the image of the mark. All Hugo Boss Watches are produces in Switzerland and
have medium-high price category. In the line of Men's Collection two new models
appeared: Identity (quartz) and MaxxClassic (autowinding). New items are also
appeared in Wonen's collection, for example a fashioned unisex model Access.
